Fuel Poverty in the UK

There were 24,000 excess winter deaths in England & Wales in the winter of 2011/2012.

Of which 21,700 were people over 65.

The World Health Organisation says that 30% of winter deaths in Europe maybe attributable to living in cold homes.

If true, that means up to 7,200 people in England and Wales died in 2011/12 from not living in warn homes.

21% of households said they are spending more than 10% of their income on gas and electricity bills, meaning they are classed as being in fuel poverty.

Wales and London has the highest shares of households saying they are already living in fuel poverty at 31% and 29% respectively.
